Rwina Records has steadily become a standout imprint over recent months. A label that’s impressive far beyond its stature, the rise in profile is largely down to its penchant for releases that hit the rare balance between dancefloor vigour and head-nodding complexity. Their latest signing from Dutch producer Krampfhaft (SR Mix #105), the First Threshold EP, is another testament to the Rwina’s consistently ahead of the curve sound, bringing equal parts attention to detail and stomping energy.
We last saw Krampfhaft leave his mark on 2011’s excellent Makin’ Magic EP, and it’d appear he picks up right where he left off with an assortment of cleverly crafted bangers. ‘Marram’ was the first to catch our attention with its nods to classic club euphoria, stepping light-footed in its ascent through a swooping groove. Heaviness isn’t forgotten though; just as Krampf brought the volatile potency before on the dance-wrecking ‘Spit Thunder’ last year, First Threshold flexes a similar sort of muscle in the middle of the release with ‘Cork,’ ‘Twin Prime’ and ‘In a Dream’ serving as the core of the EP. Three decidedly floor-geared offerings bringing into play a slew of booming kicks, rollicking hats and wailing mids, but for all the (dare-I-say-it) trap tempered carnage on display, Krampfhaft is still most arresting when taking the energy down a few notches to flaunt his touch for dark, spacey rhythms. The EP’s closer, ‘Bones’, is exactly that, tipping its hat to murky-tinged hip-hop productions of late while retaining the distinctly clean edge he’s built his name on.
To help announce the release the label have kindly passed us ‘Medicine’ a lumbering Krampfhaft production that builds layers of booms, plinks and crashes to satisfy the heavyset thunder kick drought after EPROM’s album dropped. You can grab it exclusively from us via the links below…
